Frequently asked questions

What file types can I convert?

Folio on the web accepts PDFs; images (PNG, JPG, GIF, WEBP, BMP, HEIC/HEIF, SVG, TIFF); Word documents (DOCX, RTF); spreadsheets (XLSX, XLS, XLSM, CSV); plain text (TXT, LOG); rendered Markdown (MD); and source code or data files (JSON, XML, YAML, JS, TS, Python, Swift, C, C++, Go, Rust, Ruby, Java, Kotlin, PHP, SQL, HTML, CSS, SCSS, Bash, TOML, INI, ENV).

The Folio app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac accepts PDFs; images (PNG, JPG, GIF, WEBP, BMP, HEIC/HEIF, TIFF); RTF; plain text (TXT, LOG); rendered Markdown (MD); CSV; and the same source code and data files. Word and Excel support is coming to the app in a future update.

New formats get added regularly — let me know what you'd like to see supported.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. All conversion happens in your browser (web version) or on your device (native app). Files never leave your device. See the Privacy Policy for the full details.

The conversion is taking a long time. Is something wrong?

For most file types, conversion is near-instant. Two exceptions are worth knowing about:

If the progress indicator stops moving for more than a minute, refresh the page and try with fewer files.

Why did one of my files fail?

The most common causes:

Hover the status chip on the failed item in the queue for the specific error message.

Can I reorder files before converting?

Yes, on desktop. Drag any file in the queue by its handle (the dotted icon on the left) to reorder. The final PDF preserves the order shown.

On iPhone and iPad, drag reorder isn't available in Safari — touch devices don't fire the underlying drag events the browser needs. The simplest workaround is to remove the misordered file with the ✕ button and re-add it in the position you want. The Folio app for iPhone and iPad supports full drag-to-reorder.

Can I change orientation per file?

Yes. Click the rotation chip next to any file to switch between auto, portrait, and landscape. The choice persists until you remove the file. Click the eye icon to preview each file at its current orientation before merging.

Will my converted PDF look exactly like the original?

For PDFs, yes — they're embedded byte-for-byte with no re-rendering. For images, yes — pixels are preserved. For Word documents and spreadsheets, the web version renders the layout into the PDF and it may differ slightly from how Word or Excel would print it natively (fonts substitute to system fonts, and complex formulas show their computed values). Word and Excel support is coming to the Folio app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac in a future update, using Apple's own document engine for higher fidelity.

Does it work offline?

Yes, after your first visit. The web app installs as a Progressive Web App on iOS and Android home screens, and once installed it works without an internet connection. On the desktop, you can also use it offline by re-loading the same browser tab.

How do I install it to my iPhone or iPad home screen?

Open the web app in Safari, tap the share button at the bottom of the screen, scroll down, and tap "Add to Home Screen." It will appear with the Folio icon and run full-screen like a native app.

When is the native App Store version available?

The Folio app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac is launching on the Apple App Store. It combines PDFs, images, scans, and text into a single PDF, with drag-to-reorder, page rotation, full-screen preview, and Share Sheet integration — all on your device. More capabilities, including Word and Excel support and Pro features like OCR, document encryption, watermarks, and iCloud sync, are planned for future updates. Email [email protected] to hear about new releases.

Is the converter free?

The web version is free, forever. The Folio app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac is free to download. Advanced Pro features planned for future updates will be unlocked with a single one-time In-App Purchase through the App Store — never a subscription.
